Domestic equity benchmarks hovered near the flat line in mid-afternoon trade. The Nifty traded below the 19,700 level. PSU Bank stocks witnessed a bit of selling pressure after rising for the past two trading sessions.
At 14:29 IST, the barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex, was down 37.44 points or 0.06% to 65,986.25. The Nifty 50 index added 4.15 points or 0.02% to 19,678.70.
In the broader market, the S&P BSE Mid-Cap index advanced 0.08% while the S&P BSE Small-Cap index gained 0.27%.
The market breadth was negative. On the BSE, 1,847 shares rose and 1,759 shares fell. A total of 146 shares were unchanged.
Buzzing Index:
The Nifty PSU Bank index fell 0.63% to 5,190.65. The index has lost 3.67% in the past two sessions.
Union Bank of India (down 2.45%), Bank of Baroda (down 1.61%), Canara Bank (down 1.4%), UCO Bank (down 1.06%), Indian Bank (down 0.63%), Punjab National Bank (down 0.44%), Punjab & Sind Bank (down 0.33%), Central Bank of India (down 0.2%), State Bank of India (down 0.08%) edged lower.
On the other hand, Indian Overseas Bank (up 2.53%), Bank of India (up 1.6%) and Bank of Maharashtra (up 0.33%) advanced.
Numbers to Watch:
The yield on India's 10-year benchmark federal paper rose 0.11% to 7.158 from its previous close of 7.150.
In the foreign exchange market, the rupee edged lower against the dollar. The partially convertible rupee was hovering at 83.1875, compared with its close of 83.13 during the previous trading session.
MCX Gold futures for 5 October 2023 settlement declined 0.07% to Rs 58,659.
The US Dollar index (DXY), which tracks the greenback's value against a basket of currencies, was down 0.03% to 105.97.
The United States 10-year bond yield slipped 0.46% to 4.523.
In the commodities market, Brent crude for November 2023 settlement lost $1.05 or 1.13% to $92.24 a barrel.

GVK Power & lnfrastructure was locked in an upper circuit of 5% after its board appointed Sanjeev Kumar Singh as the chief financial officer (CFO), key managerial personnel (KMP) of the company effective from 26 September 2023.
Delta Corp fell 1.96% after ace investor Ashish Kacholia sold 0.56% stake in the casino operator via bulk deal on Monday, 25 September 2023.
