Local stocks closed marginally lower, NIFTY down 0.52%

The key domestic indices ended on a mildly negative note. Nifty Metal, Nifty Chemicals and Nifty Private Bank shares gained, while Nifty IT and Nifty FMCG shares fell.


As per provisional closing data, the barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex, inched down 183.15 points or 0.24% to 77,472.94. The Nifty 50 index lost 126.80 points or 0.52% to 24,207.75.


The broader market outperformed the frontline indices. The BSE 150 MidCap Index edged higher by 0.17% and the BSE 250 SmallCap Index moved higher by 0.56%.


The market breadth was positive. On the BSE, 2758 shares rose and 2407 shares retreated. A total of 220 shares were unchanged.


Eternal Ltd was the top traded stock in NIFTY50 index today, recording a quantity of 392.47 lakh shares and recorded a sharp increase of 42.07% compared to last one-week’s average daily volume. The stock has jumped by around 11.88% in last one-month and has moved up 3.68% over last one year.


Tata Steel Ltd was the second highest traded stock in NIFTY50 index today, recording a quantity of 321.99 lakh shares and registered a sharp increase of 38.63% compared to last one-week’s average daily volume. The stock has inched higher by around 1.46% in last one-month and has risen sharply 17.11% over last one year.

The Nifty Metal index advanced slightly by 1.27% to 13541.7 today. The index is sharply higher by 2.66% in last one week and has risen 7.18% over last one month. It has surged by 41.70% in last one year. Hindustan Zinc Ltd (up 5.72%), Steel Authority of India Ltd (up 5.59%), Hindustan Copper Ltd (up 4.39%), Vedanta Ltd (up 4.18%) and NMDC Ltd (up 2.64%) jumped.


The Nifty IT index edged lower by 1.47% to 30318.85 today. The index has risen by 1.85% in last one week and has posted modest gains of 4.52% over last one month. It has fallen sharply by 15.18% in last one year. Infosys Ltd (down 2.10%), Tech Mahindra Ltd (down 1.81%), Wipro Ltd (down 1.52%), LTM Ltd (down 1.50%) and HCL Technologies Ltd (down 1.31%) moved down.


The Nifty FMCG index inched down by 0.95% to 47252.9 today. The index is modestly lower by 0.06% in last one week and has slipped by 3.75% over last one month. It lost 14.32% in last one year. Varun Beverages Ltd (down 3.82%), Nestle India Ltd (down 1.86%), Marico Ltd (down 1.71%), Britannia Industries Ltd (down 1.35%) and Tata Consumer Products Ltd (down 1.26%) fell.


Global Markets


European markets saw a mild uptick.


DOW futures are up by 0.04% today.


MCX Crude oil futures are trading lower by 2.06% at Rs 7834.0 per barrel.


NIFTY50 futures closed down 0.21% at 24420 and are in a premium of 212 points compared to NIFTY50.
