Local stocks posted modest losses, NIFTY down 0.86%

The key domestic indices finished slightly lower. Nifty IT, Nifty Realty and Nifty Financial Services shares declined, while Nifty Metal shares advanced.


As per provisional closing data, the barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex, declined 813.35 points or 1.08% to 74,764.23. The Nifty 50 index fell 203.60 points or 0.86% to 23,431.50. In the past three trading sessions, the Nifty and Sensex declined by 1.95% and 2.29%, respectively.


The broader market performed better than frontline indices. The BSE 150 MidCap Index lost 0.33% and the BSE 250 SmallCap Index posted modest losses of 0.50%.


The market breadth was fragile. On the BSE, 2127 shares rose and 3119 shares retreated. A total of 198 shares were unchanged.


Tata Steel Ltd was the top traded stock in NIFTY50 index today, recording a quantity of 459.85 lakh shares and recorded a sharp spurt of 59.86% compared to last one-week’s average daily volume. The stock has slumped by around 3.20% in last one-month and has climbed sharply 9.08% over last one year.


HDFC Bank Ltd was the second highest traded stock in NIFTY50 index today, recording a quantity of 391.74 lakh shares and posted a sharp rise of 50.97% compared to last one-week’s average daily volume. The stock has fallen sharply by around 3.83% in last one-month and has lost significant ground 27.23% over last one year.


Index action


The Nifty Metal index climbed by 1.79% to 13391.4 today. The index is modestly lower by 0.26% in last one week and has drifted lower by 0.53% over last one month. It is sharply higher by around 35.38% in last one year. Jindal Stainless Ltd (up 6.03%), Adani Enterprises Ltd (up 5.13%), Tata Steel Ltd (up 2.50%), Hindalco Industries Ltd (up 1.77%) and National Aluminium Company Ltd (up 1.77%) gained.


The Nifty IT index slumped 3.24% to 28914.0 today. The index has declined sharply by 5.12% in last one week and has shed 5.53% over last one month. It is lower by around 12.90% in last one year. Coforge Ltd (down 5.38%), Infosys Ltd (down 4.34%), HCL Technologies Ltd (down 3.70%), Tech Mahindra Ltd (down 3.27%) and Wipro Ltd (down 2.62%) moved down.


The Nifty Realty index shed 2.23% to 872.2 today. The index is marginally higher by 0.08% in last one week and has slipped by 0.66% over last one month. It has edged higher by 1.77% in last one year. Lodha Developers Ltd (down 3.80%), Brigade Enterprises Ltd (down 3.51%), DLF Ltd (down 2.96%), Godrej Properties Ltd (down 2.60%) and Aditya Birla Real Estate Ltd (down 2.49%) slipped.


Global Markets


European markets slipped slightly.


DOW futures are marginally lower by 0.60% today.


MCX Crude oil futures are significantly higher by 3.65% at Rs 8740.0 per barrel.


NIFTY50 futures ended with a modest loss of 0.92% at 23530 and are in a premium of 98 points compared to NIFTY50.
