Japanese equities demonstrated relative weakness compared to Wall Street, which registered further record highs overnight.
Technology and artificial intelligence equities were under significant downward pressure, evidenced by declines in Kioxia Holdings, which decreased 4.5%, Advantest, down 1.3%, Fujikura, falling 2.7%, Disco Corp, losing 6.3% and Tokyo Electron, dropping 2.4%. Financial sector participants also demonstrated weakness, with Mitsubishi UFJ retreating 1.3%, Sumitomo Mitsui decreasing 1.7% and Mizuho Financial declining 2.4%.
