U.S. stock market slips off record high as oil prices mount
11-Aug-26 12:52Hrs IST

The U.S. stock market slightly declined on Monday, falling from its previous all-time high. The S&P 500 dropped 0.1%, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average decreased by 60 points (0.1%), and the Nasdaq composite fell 0.3%. Oil prices, however, increased by 5% to $87.72 per barrel due to uncertainty over when the Strait of Hormuz might reopen for oil exportation. Last month, oil prices fluctuated between $72 and $102, reflecting the changing hopes of an agreement between the United States and Iran regarding oil tanker movements. Rising oil prices can lead to higher inflation, with Wall Street awaiting an update on last month's inflation rates, expected to show a slowdown from 3.5% to 3.4%. A lower inflation rate would ease the pressure on the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates, which can affect borrowing costs for households and businesses.

A recent report indicated weak hiring trends in the U.S., which also lowered expectations for interest rate hikes. Nevertheless, there is still a 52% chance that the Federal Reserve will raise interest rates in September. Berkshire Hathaway, led by Warren Buffett, reported stronger profits than expected and has begun investing its cash into stocks under new CEO Greg Abel, as strong profit reports can make expensive stocks appear more attractive. Its stock rose 1.5%.

MarineMax’s stock surged 46.1% after agreeing to a $1.5 billion sale to a Blackstone portfolio company, while Varex Imaging gained 48.8% after being bought by Teledyne Technologies for $18.90 per share. In contrast, Intel fell 4.1% after announcing a potential $15 billion stock sale, which would dilute current shareholders' stakes. Internationally, stock indexes were mixed in Europe while Japan's Nikkei 225 rose 2.1%. The yield on the 10-year Treasury increased from 4.65% to 4.70%, impacting mortgage and loan rates.
