The Unified Payments Interface (UPI) was launched on 25th August 2016 by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), under the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). It is celebrating its 10th anniversary and has changed digital payments in India. UPI has become essential for India's digital payment system and financial inclusion. Since its launch, UPI's annual transaction volume has jumped from 1.78 crore in FY 2016-17 to over 24,162 crore in FY 2025-26, a nearly 13,000-fold increase. Additionally, the transaction value grew from Rs 0.07 lakh crore to around Rs 314 lakh crore in the same period, reflecting over a 4,000-fold rise. UPI supports seamless payments between people and merchants through one app.
